Singapore: A City in Nature Where Large Experiences Come with Small Footprints

Embracing sustainability for MICE delegates and business travelers

The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) industry in Singapore has also made sustainability a priority. Singapore offers a conducive environment for MICE event organisers to host sustainable events, allowing them to seamlessly integrate eco-friendly experiences into the MICE delegate journey.

Singapore’s MICE venues are not only beautifully designed and built but are also committed to adopting sustainability into their operations. For examples:

Marina Bay Sands (MBS) – MBS has imbued sustainability into the heart of their experiences, with sustainability underpinning the property’s operations since it opened in 2010. In May 2022, MBS was accorded the Events Industry Council (EIC) Sustainable Events Standards for Venues Platinum certification and continues to be the highest-rated venue outside the United States.

The Sands Expo and Convention Centre also became the first carbon-neutral MICE venue in Singapore in 2020. Since 2012, MBS has reduced their carbon footprint by over 30%, through investments in an Intelligent Building Management System, Building AI data analytics, and other carbon tech efficiency measures.

Their condensate water recovery project recycles water from 3,000 air conditioning units across their three hotel towers, saving an average of 80,000 litres of water a day; the recycled condensate water is then used for the water features around the property, exterior landscaping and to irrigate plants at the hotel.

MBS has also established long-term partnerships with Food from the Heart and The Food Bank Singapore to donate unserved food to beneficiaries.

Singapore EXPO – Singapore EXPO’s meeting rooms wing was the first MICE facility in Singapore to receive the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum Standard certification in 2011 for its eco-friendly design and abundant use of natural light and greenery, and was certified with SACEOS MICE Sustainability Certification Sustainability is at the focus of the processes and practices deployed at Singapore EXPO like the implementation of a systematic energy efficiency plan, water consumption management initiatives such as using NEWater instead of fresh water to dispel heat from the air conditioning cooling towers.

As part of its elevated event experiences, Singapore EXPO advocates waste management initiatives such as reducing single-use plastics, sourcing from local partners and deploying sustainable and environmentally friendly meal packaging and water bottles at function areas.

Singapore EXPO is moving towards carbon neutrality, through use of renewable energy sources like more solar panel installations for total energy consumption and other initiatives to support the strategic vision.
