Starbucks Announces Its First Certified Greener Store in Indonesia

Using responsible material to meet the health and well-being design aspects

  • We design the building to meet or exceed Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) by using white color roof, choose mercury free lighting, and low emitting material – including VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) requirements for paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and composite wood products, to be followed by all General Contractors tasked with installing materials.

Custom artwork from locally sourced plastic waste materials.

  • The custom artwork, a colorful curation of the Siren harboring the store from above, is executed by local artist Ayu Arista Murti, composed of locally sourced plastic waste materials, calling for the awareness of water pollution and environmental protection.
  • We imply the indoor acoustic ceiling design to meet Starbucks standards to ensure partners and customers comfort and mitigate noise level to an acceptable decibel level.
  • Have awning to reduce sun heat through the window with shading availability (blind, shade, curtain) to control natural light exposure.
  • Use responsible and “safe to the planet” packaging that meets or exceeds regulations while reducing climate impact and packaging waste.
  • Apart from the physical building, Starbucks Supplier Code of Conduct underlies all agreements with suppliers and vendors that must be always followed, including Starbucks Organizational Policy: C.A.F.E. Practices, verified by SCS (Scientific Certification Systems) Global.

Highlighting energy efficiency on operational

  • We use 100% LED lighting as standard specification for all internal and external spaces. Starbucks lighting design philosophy ensures adequate lighting for partners to perform their duties comfortably, while simultaneously providing comfortable spaces for customers throughout the day, using warm and cool lighting temperatures.
  • Use energy efficient water filter, refrigerator, AC with controller availability (reiri system), cautious water stewardship.
  • Electricity only store with no natural gas.
  • Electric vehicle charging availability at the parking area.

On its way towards a more sustainable future

In support of Starbucks 2030 goals of reducing carbon, water, and waste footprints by 50%, the open-source Greener Stores Framework was co-developed with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The framework includes a set of 25 performance-based standards across environmental impact areas such as energy efficiency, water stewardship, and waste diversion, designed to accelerate the transformation of retail towards lower-impact stores.
