Why not Legalize Cannabis for Health Purposes?

YSN Chairperson Dhira Narayana emphasized that, “This achievement is a historical milestone in the struggle for the legalization of the use of cannabis in Indonesia. Undoubtedly this is the result of more than 10 years of work by our friends at the LGN and YSN. We are now entering a new chapter in the struggle and I am confidence that we can discover the extraordinary potential of the Indonesian cannabis plant.”

The dream of doing medical cannabis research was envisioned by the late Prof. Dr. H. Musri Musman, M.Sc, USK Professor of Natural Material Chemistry, who is also the founder of YSN. Throughout his life he had worked diligently to establish a collaboration between YSN and USK, until finally in 2020, Prof. Musri was also appointed as the Head of PRO Herbal USK, before being succeeded by Dr. err. nat. Khairan, S.Si., M.Si.

“With the signing of this Cooperation Agreement, PRO Herbal will immediately conduct the research on the benefits of this cannabis plant. At the very least we can start with a Geographical Indication study,” said the Head of PRO HERBAL, Dr. err. nat. Khairan, S.Si., M.Si.

Through this collaboration, YSN and USK are hoping to be able to develop native Indonesian varieties Cannabis-based herbal products. In addition to herbal medicines, this joint activity is also open for the possibility of producing other derivative product innovations such as cosmetic or textile products.

Finally, of course, we hope that the research results may improve people’s understanding of the benefits of cannabis plant and affirm the government’s decision to immediately revise the cannabis from class 1 to class 3 in the Narcotics Laws Number 35 Year 2009.
