New Spa & Wellness Treatments Support Community Initiatives

0

AT BELMOND JIMBARAN PURI

Belmond Jimbaran Puri has curated new spa and wellness treatments that provide guests with an authentic Balinese tropical spa experience while also supporting local organic agriculture. The new spa treatments are available at both The Beach Spa, with views over the beautiful Jimbaran beach, as well as in our recently introduced Pop-Up Spa.

The Beach Spa offers a wide range of luxurious treatments that combine modern techniques with ancient beauty rituals while the Pop-Up Spa offers guests true alfresco relaxation with treatments either on the beach or in our tranquil tropical gardens. The Pop-Up Spa includes a traditional Balinese massage followed by a 30-minute body scrub of choice to exfoliate the skin and restore harmony to the mind and body.

The spa at Belmond Jimbaran Puri sources the organic ingredients directly from local communities including the luwak coffee farmers and the Kusamba salt farmers.

Balinese Coffee Scrub

Made from finely ground local coffee and volcanic pumice from Bali’s sacred Mt. Agung, the Balinese Coffee Scrub smooths and refines the skin while revitalizing the spirit.

Luwak Coffee Scrub

Belmond Jimbaran Puri only use beans that are genuinely from wild civets (Luwak); these beans are sustainably sourced from local farmers who forage the rain forests to ‘harvest’ the beans. The resort also works with a local company that helps coffee farmers enhance their skills to produce the highest-quality beans.

Kusamba Sea Salt

The Balinese Sea Salts are produced using the same traditional method as local farmers used over 700 years ago. The natural combination of soil, spring and saltwater on the coast of Kusamba produces a sea salt that has a nutrient and mineral profile unique to Bali. Belmond Jimbaran Puri works with 30 groups of Kusamba salt farmers who produce the 100% organic and natural salts used in our scrubs.

Wilson Associates Unveils Pai Thai in Jumeirah Al Qasr Resort

0

The Firm’s Dubai Studio Was Tapped to Refresh the Restaurant Interiors

Global architectural design firm Wilson Associates’ Dubai studio is pleased to debut its renovation for Pai Thai, a fine dining establishment located inside of the Jumeirah Al Qasr Resort in Dubai. The firm was tapped to refresh the restaurant’s interiors while increasing dining capacity, season-proofing the exteriors for year-round service, and creating efficient patterns of mobility and flow for both patrons and staff.

The senses served as inspiration for the design concept –– encouraging guests to let go and allow their senses to guide them through the dining experience, with each element permeated in the authentic scents, sounds, and lighting of Thai culture.

Traditional Thai umbrellas, the soft glow of candlelight, and the scent of jasmine welcome patrons as they arrive by boat and step up to the main entrance, while the sound of water and the aroma of incense await guests at the grand arrival pavilion. These sensorial ambiances continue throughout the various spaces, with curated beats further immersing guests into the world of Pai Thai.

Designed in the style of a Sheikh’s summer residence, the Jumeirah Al Qasr Resort in Dubai is a one-a-kind destination that embodies palatial luxury inspired by 1,001 Arabian Nights. Pai Thai, an authentic Thai cuisine experience, is situated amid the waterways of the resort. Hidden behind the lush foliage of the surrounding gardens, the restaurant invites guests to make their way through a boat or buggy where they will ultimately come across an expansive terrace that hangs across the water.

Pai Thai’s distinctive facade, boasting both character and tradition, is draped by the backdrop of the expansive waterside terrace and charming inner courtyard. The path from Abra Station to the front entrance is lined with unique, decorative umbrellas in different shapes and sizes; sourced in Thailand and detailed with bells.

The interiors refresh resulted in a buzzy, yet intimate experience that lives up to Pai Thai’s recognition within the region as a “bucket list” dining destination with a wealth of industry awards and a loyal following. Keen to maintain Pai Thai’s eclectic character, the client asked the Wilson Associates team to honor the restaurant’s charm while refreshing the offering to stay competitive in Dubai’s increasingly saturated food and beverage market.

As guests step out of their boats and into the inner courtyard, the space beckons diners with a new designation as Pai Thai’s bar and lounge space –– offering guests a quaint respite to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or a post-meal hideaway for aperitifs and dessert. An impressive central bar anchors the new lounge, creating an environment that transports visitors to Thailand upon arrival. Playful lighting overhead dons monkey and parrot figures, hung from the newly installed retractable ceiling, which allows the reactivated courtyard to be used seasonally. Further exploring the animal theme, the bar footrest is supported by elephant-shaped hardware –– a concept the design team implemented down to the smallest detail.

Throughout the process, it was important to the Wilson Associates Dubai team –– in keeping with their studio’s design philosophy –– to utilize as much of the existing restaurant and be as sustainable in its refresh as possible. Bringing this ethos to Pai Thai’s cultural inspiration, a selection of evocative wall coverings were installed. Eight wall panels in the bar are upholstered in Jim Thompson tiger print fabric and an Ananbo tropical print adorns the family dining room. Bathrooms feature a custom print of cheeky monkeys surrounded by a gold tiled wall by Maya Romanoff, which served to complement the brass faucets from Sherle Wagner.

Ceiling fans and furniture pieces were revamped rather than replaced and complemented with quirky additions, such as the lighting from Marie Martin, while coral hues and accent materials enhance the current character and charming soul of Pai Thai. The warm yet vibrant interior complements the overall Thai flair with stylish iconic elements and traditional, eclectic glamour.

Aman’s Community Spirit

0

During these recent months of challenge, unpredictability and hardship — from Asia to America — it has been heart-warming to be shown that we heal not in solitude, but through community and connection. In all of Aman’s destinations, we’ve seen such love, concern and care for the welfare of our wider communities from our Aman family, all over the world. Let us share some stories of how our teams have been helping their neighbours and extended families.

Amangiri

Feeding our Navajo family in Utah and nurturing cultural preservation

The Navajo Nation surrounds Amangiri in the American Southwest’s Canyon Country. Half of the team who work at the hotel, live on the reservation. They were greatly impacted by the pandemic, and as a way of supporting the the community, the resort has been creating pre-packaged meals to help feed hundreds. Many of these meals have been delivered to communities in very remote areas.

Eli Secody, Navajo leader, and member of the Earth Surface People clan: ‘Our Navajo clan system is our hospitality, it is our connection to new family members if our clans relate. Everything here in the Navajo Nation has meaning. Down to the details of the Navajo individual, to the rivers, rocks, plants, trees, mountains, the animals, the wind, the sunrise, the daytime, the evening time, the night-time and especially our Navajo language. The language is all connected to the sacredness of nature. When a guestcomes to Navajo land they are going to experience our storytelling.’

ASIA

At the heart of many ancient Asian belief systems is the concept of Dharma. Not a word easy to explain to the uninitiated, yet the simple spiritual instinct to do what’s right. In Aman terms, our Dharma or duty, is not simply just to consider the wellbeing of our guests, our Dharma is our community spirit — our way of striving to uphold the natural order of the universe. As it says in the Bhagavad Gita: Do your work with the welfare of others always in mind.

INDONESIA Amanjiwo

Supporting local children with essentials in Java

It is always a priority to consider how we can support the micro-economies around Amanjiwo and to foster opportunities for locally-made products and generate income for the families working with our resort — such as making small handmade batik pouches filled with hand sanitiser, wipes and face masks as gifts for guests.

Jann Hess, General Manager: ‘The orphanage was set up many years ago and houses a hundred young people. It has always been supported by Amanjiwo — but during this time they were in urgent need of food and supplies, such as educational items, schoolbooks, and mattresses. I am really keen to think deeper about how to support them in as meaningful a way as we can, rather than buy what is urgently needed, and in time educate our guests about all that they do.’

Amandari

Growing nutritious food together in Ubud, the leafy heart of Bali

Organic produce from the gardens of Amandari has been shared with the local village of Kedewatan throughout recent months. The gardening team continue to produce fruits and vegetables and the villagers have been invited to plant their preferred varieties in the garden to harvest during this unprecedented period. Many Balinese work in the tourism industry. As their local Ubud community feels the effects of this ongoing crisis, the need for support when it comes to essentials is great.

Amankila

Socio-economic support of Bali’s microbusinesses in Manggis

Soul Bali is an NGO established by members of the Amankila front office team, which supports children and the elderly, who live in poor conditions or with difficult access to medical care and social contact. Heart, spirit, humanity, integrity, compassion and selfless service are the essential values that drive the foundation. The resort has commissioned the making of hundreds of facemasks, and Amankila works with Soul Bali Charity to source a selection of their turndown gifts, such as local salt and coffee, showcasing the beauty of Bali.

Kusamba salt harvesters live together in modest huts on the beach, extracting sea salt to be sold in the market. Using a traditional method, they produce natural salt with a truly distinctive texture and subtle flavour. The old-fashioned way of processing Balinese coffee (Kopi Bali) called ‘wet processing’ removes the fruit covering the coffee bean while it is still wet. This method creates a distinctive taste and is much brighter than other coffee in the archipelago, and it’s gifted to guests through Soul Bali Charity, andthrough this they can help support the work of this grass-roots charity.

PHILIPPINES Amanpulo

A symbiotic relationship with its local community

A 45-minute boat ride from Amanpulo lies the island of Manamoc, where a community of kind-hearted people raise their families by providing service to the resort. In isolation, Amanpulo and Manamoc have developed a beautiful and fruitful symbiotic relationship through generations. In partnership with the Andres Soriano Foundation, Amanpulo has extended its aid to the residents of Manamoc Island by sending much-needed food, vitamins and masks.

AMANPULO

JAPAN Amanemu

Shaping a better future together with Shima’s students

Working with Shima city, Amanemu is hosting a tour for local high school students in September as part of a drive to encourage more people from the local area to engage with the property and consider it as a place to work. Noriko Tanaka, General Manager, has been exploring how her team can do more volunteer work. A local public school hosts a three-year Shima Studies class in which they study local businesses and visit these companies. In this class they will get to know the local area, then think about issues affecting their community, and in their third year reflect on how to take action.

Noriko Tanaka, General Manager: ‘It is a great opportunity to showcase Amanemu to these young students, especially as our gates are usually closed to outside visitors, and through this the local Shima people will better get to know us, and we will get to know them.’

INDIA Amanbagh

Making masks and looking after each other in remote Rajasthan

The lockdown in India was so unexpected that 65 employees couldn’t go home to their respective states, so they were brought to the property to live. This started as being for three weeks in lockdown, but 49 employees and seven hotel-school trainees stayed for 11 weeks. So that everyone could remain in touch with family they installed a portable modem in the staff accommodation area. They also enrolled employees in Typsy, an online training programme, which they have loved and many completed courses in hospitality management.

Karin Van Zyl, General Manager: ‘Since we are located in such a remote area we have always embraced a family feeling at Amanbagh. We work and live together as a family and though we miss our blood family, we have each other and cheer each other up.’

Karin found an antique sewing machine in the laundry and started making masks initially for team members and family, but it grew to be given to delivery people and then to local school children. They all live in multigenerational homes in the village and protecting the older generation is of vital importance, especially in this rural community. ‘I found a pattern for children’s masks and we raided our spa store and discovered a roll of calico, destined to become poultices for our Ayurveda treatments: this unbleached cotton was perfect for masks.’ During the windy season, they also collected branches and twigs for villagers to use as firewood.

Amankora, Bhutan

Growing vegetables to training Guardians of Peace

With the uncertainty of when the border will reopen, the management team has been doing all they can to assist and protect the livelihoods and welfare of their team members during these challenging times — and this has included supporting 42 men and women from the Amankora team who were specially selected to take part in the country’s Disaster Management programmes (desuung.org.bt). As His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo says, ‘Of paramount importance to the strength of a nation, is the ability of her people to live as one united family – a community in which interaction is marked by trust, understanding and cooperation.’

Amankora

In addition, the team have planted a small fruit tree orchard at each of the lodges in memory of the hardships suffered during this pandemic. The trees were planted on an auspicious day and will blossom on a seasonal basis coinciding with the months worst hit by the pandemic to signify new life and optimism.

Although Amankora’s efforts to support the local communities and natural surroundings have increased during the pandemic, the teams in each of the five lodges have long been involved in a variety of projects. These include, assisting in the rebuilding of the Wangdue Dzong temple and fortress in Punakha, which was almost entirely destroyed in a fire; regular clean-ups of forested areas and the hoisting of new prayer flags in sacred spots in Thimphu, and the delivery of food and essentials to the monks and caretakers of Tiger’s Nest in Paro.

Jonathan Lithgow, General Manager. ‘In Bhutan there is an incredible loyalty to His Majesty and an intense pride to be Bhutanese. As part of its COVID-19 readiness initiatives, the Government is training volunteers through their De-Suung — or Guardians of Peace — training, and we are paying our team’s salaries while they take part in the programme.’

CAMBODIA Amansara

Looking after Siem Reap’s most vulnerable including donating to blood banks

The team from Amansara have been delivering relief and hygiene packages to the most vulnerable and to some Pagodas (the active Buddhist Temples). These have included non-perishable parcels of rice, noodles, oil, sardines, vitamins and electrolytes, soap, and COVID-19 awareness literature, posters, and masks. They commissioned handwoven cotton and silk masks from the social enterprise Fairweave, which fights poverty and builds sustainable livelihoods for women, especially mothers, in remote areas.

Amansara

Astrid Killian, General Manager: ‘We have, of course, been engaging in much more community work during this difficult period and it’s been so lovely to see members of our team take the initiative to share knowledge and awareness with our surrounding community and set up trail clean-ups as well as donate blood to the local children’s hospitals. The blood banks are always in need of support, and even though we usually contribute once a year, during this period they have been in a critical situation due to people being scared to visit hospitals during the pandemic. Thanks to a team of 14 from Amanyara in Turks and Caicos visiting our resort, the Angkor Hospital for Children they were able to boost their stock for various blood types.’

Mouth-Nose-Masks at Copenhagen Fashion Week SS21 – Mercedes-Benz Partners with Helena Christensen

0

Copenhagen/Stuttgart.  At Copenhagen Fashion Week SS21, Mercedes-Benz partnered with Danish supermodel Helena Christensen to raise awareness around the importance of wearing mouth-nose-masks to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. During the four day event from 9-12 August, Christensen was photographed against some of Copenhagen’s most storied landmarks, styled in five Danish designers’ new collections that incorporated face masks they had either created or customised.

A face of the luxury industry for over three decades, Helena Christensen perfectly typifies the social responsibility of Mercedes-Benz, by demonstrating the importance of wearing a mask at the Copenhagen Fashion Week SS21, and how they can even be elevated to a piece of  iconic design. Both parties want to make a stand on the importance of wearing face coverings, and to do so in a suitably creative way.

“We at Mercedes-Benz are very aware of our social responsibility to show attitude and act as role model especially in difficult times. As a leading luxury brand we are delighted to implement this in partnership with Helena – one of the most iconic faces in fashion”, said Bettina Haussmann, Head of Mercedes-Benz Branded Entertainment.

Mercedes-Benz Denmark’s long standing relationship with Copenhagen Fashion Week can be traced back to 2009, when Mercedes-Benz began facilitating shared fashion show locations for several designers each season. More recently, Mercedes-Benz has focused on collaborating with one designer in a more in depth capacity, often to create engaging social media content and impactful visuals around their show or event. Recent partnerships include the likes of Danish Designer Soeren Le Schmidt. On the 10th August 2020, Mercedes-Benz co-hosted the opening reception of much loved fashion brand GANNI’s 202020 exhibition, which brought together clothing, art, discussion and performance for an immersive and collaborative brand experience.

Mercedes-Benz also highlighted Copenhagen Fashion Week’s commitment to sustainability by using branded electric and hybrid vehicles to transport VIP guests between events, along with providing shuttle service at the GANNI opening reception.

About Helena Christensen

Helena Christensen emerged in a blaze of high octane glamour during the 1990s as one of the original supermodels and changed the fashion industry forever. A muse to the late Gianni Versace, she starred in campaigns and runway shows for the iconic Italian fashion house, as well as brands like Chanel, Hermès, Prada and Valentino. Christensen has graced the cover of magazines like W, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue on multiple occasions. With her appearance in the Herb Ritts shot music video for Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” in 1989, she had a worldwide breakthrough as one the iconic supermodels of the 90ies.

Behind the lens, Christensen is an accomplished photographer and has shot editorials for titles including Vogue, Elle, Dscene, ODDA and Marie Claire magazine, recognized for co-founding Nylon magazine. Throughout her career she has continually used her voice for change, using numerous platforms and organisations to raise awareness of and document the impact of climate change, and numerous humanitarian causes.

Christensen partnered with Oxfam in 2009 to document the impact of the social impact of the changing weather in Peru, where her mother was born. In 2019, the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR appointed Christensen as a “Goodwill Ambassador”, one of only a handful of people to receive such an accolade, she continues to use photography to document and show the refugee crisis around the World.

Health Protocol to Improve Reputation and Public’s Trust on Restaurants and Eateries

0

Through Indonesia Care Campaign, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) Invites Associations, Industries and The Public to Make Health Protocol Implementation as Shared Awareness.

As the transitional period of social distancing eases in, the public is now turning to restaurants and eateries as their short-term leisure destinations dubbed short escape after spending around 2-3 months protecting themselves from the risk of Covid-19 spread by staying at home. The government and the industries have shared view that the implementation of health, cleanliness and safety protocol plays a key factor in reputation build-up as well as boosting the public’s trust.

Therefore, in Voxpp Shout!’s discussion entitled “Closer with Indonesia Care Campaign and K4 Protocol for Restaurants”, the restaurant industry and its association express their anticipation to support and actively participate in conveying, as well as socializing, the InDOnesia CARE campaign, a protocol inclusive of Cleanliness, Health, Safety and Environment/CHSE, for the sake of both the industry’s sustainability and the public’s security.

Assistant Minister for Sustainable Development and Conservation of The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Frans Teguh, said that “In order to expedite recovery, destination preparedness, and rebound strategy as well as to build the public’s trust, the implementation of K4 protocol, InDOnesia CARE, must share common acknowledgement between all stakeholders: the Central and Regional Government, restaurant and eatery managers, employees, and guests as well as visitors.”

In more detail, Frans Teguh explained that in the implementation process, restaurant and eatery managers and business owners is fully responsible for the implementation of health protocol in the shared effort to control the spread and transmission of Covid-19 by observing the elements of prevention, case finding, and fast and effective handling.

A strict and thorough protocol implementation will surely improve reputation, return business operation to normal, stimulate the economy, ensure safety and boost the public;s trust. In practice alongside protocol implementation, managers must also be able to develop their own technical procedures for their services.

Host of Webinar ZOOM Meeting.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of Indonesian Association of Hotels and Restaurants (PHRI), Maulana Yusran, stated that the restaurant and eatery business is facing quite a challenging predicament, the rising number of customers coming in, and the special effort required to isolate and implement health protocol. Adapting to the new normal may become challenging for managers.

Not only that they have to face decreasing number of customers due to work from home policy, but they also have to take the extra effort to introduce a new culture in implementing health protocol. Customers, for example, could take on an unfriendly attitude when being warned to wear their mask correctly. On the other hand, the restaurant industry’s effort to communicate health protocol to the public can be positioned as a part of marketing strategy during this new normal adaptation period.

Health protocol implementation has now become the ultimate factor and we are all ready to support the Government and actively participate in conveying it to the public, specifically, the costumers. We are certain that a good protocol implementation by restaurant and eatery owners and managers will be able to boost the public’s trust and lift up the industry’s reputation itself.

During the same occasion, F&B Policy Manager of Roemah Kuliner, Fregat Pattiwaelapia delivered his statement that the public has now started to go out of their homes again to and engage in leisure. Short escape or nearby leisure activity becomes a viable choice, and restaurants and eateries are commonly its subjects. We put a special interest in the safety and health of our employees and customers, therefore we have implemented health protocol right after our business started to operate again and we do not consider it as a burden at all but rather an endeavor to ensure cleanliness, health and safety of the employees and visitors.

As it goes, we also feel the need to continue to learn and observe recent development regarding the issue. Expressing similar enthusiasm, Roemah Kuliner is ready to support and collaborate as well as socializing the principals and values in the K4 protocol – InDOnesia CARE, especially for the restaurant industry.
