The event will showcase a captivating exhibition, a lively bazaar, and an exciting fun walk and run, ensuring entertainment for all.
Yayasan Batik Indonesia (YBI) proudly presents its annual “Bangga Berbatik” celebration in honor of National Batik Day. Scheduled to take place from 2-6 October 2024 at Kota Kasablanka Mall in South Jakarta, this event promises to be a highlight of the year. As a recurring annual event, this celebration is organized by Yayasan Batik Indonesia (YBI), a foundation established on 28 October 1994, spearheaded by Jultin Ginandjar Kartasasmita, Ir. Firdaus Ali, and DR. Dipo Alam MEM.
This year, YBI has selected Gedog Tuban batik as the icon of National Batik Day 2024. Originating from Tuban, East Java, this unique batik is celebrated for its rare cultural heritage. Gedog Tuban batik exemplifies local craftsmanship with Chinese influences, particularly visible in its Phoenix bird motifs. This fusion of cultures arose from Tuban’s historical significance as a key entry point for Chinese migrants in the past.
The process of making this batik is quite unique, as it still uses cotton thread spun from cotton plants that grow abundantly in Tuban. Additionally, this batik is made using simple gedog looms and is crafted by the local people of Tuban. Interestingly, in the town of Tuban, batik-making has become a tradition among women and is passed down through generations.
In this cultural event, Yayasan Batik Indonesia will showcase an educational exhibition through modern installations that keep up with current developments, in the form of a multimedia tunnel.
Here, visitors can enjoy a new experience by entering an immersive display featuring animated batik that has received Geographical Indication (GI) certification from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, represented by the Directorate of Trademarks and Geographical Indications – Directorate General of Intellectual Property. These include Batik Nitik, Batik Besurek, Batik Complongan, Batik Sarung Pekalongan, and Batik Lasem.
In addition to the immersive installation, the five-day event will feature a vibrant bazaar with over 45 small and medium enterprises showcasing diverse batik collections from regions across Indonesia.
As an event that embraces all communities, the HBN24 celebration will feature various activities each day, such as fashion shows, talk show programs discussing the history, philosophy, and development of batik in Indonesia, as well as musical performances.
The highlight of the event on Sunday, October 6, 2024, will be the Hari Batik Fun Run and Walk at Plaza Sudirman, Gelora Bung Karno (GBK), Jakarta, which will also serve as a fundraising event through donations to support YBI’s efforts in protecting, preserving, developing, and promoting batik. This event also aims to encourage the public to engage in more physical exercise for better health.
