Day of Silence by the Sea at Jimbaran Puri, A Belmond Hotel, Bali

Tranquil Nyepi Celebration on Bali’s Best Beach

The month of March marks the start of the New Year in the Balinese Saka Calendar, known as Nyepi or the Day of Silence. The most unique and sacred celebration in Bali, this day is dedicated to connecting oneself with God through prayers and at the same time as a day of self-introspection and reflection.

Commemorate this year’s Balinese Day of Silence which falls on 22nd March 2023 at Jimbaran Puri, A Belmond Hotel, Bali and immerse in the sights, sounds and serenity of the Island of the Gods. Nestled in one of Bali’s most exclusive bays, Jimbaran Puri is a place for guests to press pause, relax and form a connection with the tranquil landscape while embracing the silence surrounded by pristine white sands, lofty palms and sweeping sea views.

Leading to the Nyepi celebration, on 16th March 2023 in-house guests are invited for a sunset cocktail and to meet with Balinese artist, Marmar Herayukti. A prominent artist specializing in the creation of Ogoh-ogoh and utilization of eco-friendly materials, Marmar will share his knowledge about the sacred rituals of Nyepi and Ogoh-ogoh, a large-scale statue made out of pulp, glue and bamboo which reflects human’s realization towards the power of the universe. A magnificent Ogoh-ogoh is also displayed at the resort for guests to admire until Nyepi.

As with many creative endeavours based on Balinese Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy in concatenation with Nyepi. From 20th – 24th March, guests are able to appreciate Ogoh-ogoh through the paintings made by the resort’s in-house talents, showcased throughout the lobby and Tunjung restaurant.

On the evening before Nyepi, guests are invited to take part in the Pengrupukan Ritual, a ceremony of cleansing and casting out Bhuta Kala, a representation of evil spirit in the Balinese Hindu mythology, by rice throwing and making offerings in hopes of a blessed and peaceful year ahead.

Located just 15-minute drive from Ngurah Rai airport, Jimbaran Puri is a place of tranquility that is rich in island spirit. The resort’s design intricately weaves in Balinese craftsmanship, incorporating locally-sourced materials such as bamboo, teak and alang-alang thatching with high-beamed ceilings and a calm, natural palette – setting the scene for a total mind and body relaxation.

Guests must remain within the resort during Nyepi Day from 06.00am on 22nd March to 06.00am on 23rd March. To respect this holy day, Nelayan Restaurant will be closed while Tunjung Restaurant and Puri Bar including the spa and main pool will remain open for guests until 05.00pm.
