Committed to a Sustainable Tomorrow: The Residence Maldives Presents Paradise with Responsible Action

Recycling Water

Used water is collected and processed by a sewage treatment plant in the resort. The sewage treatment plant is used to filter and treat the water before it is used to irrigate the gardens and resort grounds.

An Environment Wooden plaque is also placed in each villa which guests can place on their bed if they do not want their sheets to be changed. Guests should be encouraged to reuse their towels as part of the resort’s efforts to conserve water and minimise the use of laundry detergent.

In-House Bottled Water

The Residence Maldives has replaced plastic drinking water bottles with eco-friendly glass bottled water, which has greatly reduced the usage of single-use plastic bottles in the resort as well as reduced the carbon emissions of having to transport bottled water to the resort.

Eco-Dining

The resort has eliminated the use of plastic straws and stirrers, replacing these with paper straws and wooden stirrers which can be composted. Paper menus which had to be constantly reprinted when soiled have been replaced with a digital tablet in all restaurants and bars in the resort. The team continuously finds new ways to introduce eco-friendly table decorations such using solar-powered LED light jars as table centrepieces.

Spa by Clarins

Spa Products at the Spa by Clarins uses recyclable packaging for their oils and creams that are retailed. Clarins beauty products are plant science products and offer eco-conscious consumers preservative-free and organic products suited to the different skin types. In its daily operations, the Spa prepares the healthy teas and refreshing juices in glass dispensers which are eco-friendly.

#ProtectMaldivesSeagrass

Launched by the Blue Marine Foundation and the Maldives Underwater Initiative in 2019 and endorsed by the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism in an attempt to protect the delicate ecosystem of the marine life, The Residence Maldives has joined the initiative and taken the pledge to protect 100% of the seagrass meadows that surround the island which makes up approximately 300,000 m2 of our lagoon across two resorts by not intentionally smother, dig or pluck up the seagrass meadows.

Seagrass prevents beach erosion, fights climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, provides food for sea turtles, supports fisheries and houses juvenile coral reef fish – however most resorts remove the seagrass as they find it unsightly. The seagrass also acts as a carbon sink for the ocean capturing carbon up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests and, even though it only covers 0.2% of the seafloor and absorbs 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year.
