Nepal Van Java Gets Colourful to Boost Local Economy

Nippon Paint Brings Colour to Dusun Butuh (Nepal Van Java)

Located at the altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, Dusun Butuh is the highest village in Magelang Regency, Central Java. The settlement, which is part of the Temanggung Village in Kaliangkrik District, was used to be the climbing route to Mount Sumbing. “For many people, this place may have not be attractive because of its far distance from city center with minimum facilities. Most of the residents were farmers, growing vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage, and others,” said Lilik Setiyawan – the Committee Chair and Local Chief.

Travelers often compare the charm of local houses piled on top of each other on the slopes of Mount Sumbing with the Himalayan village of Namche Bazaar, which earned the nickname Nepal van Java in 2019.

Therefore, Lilik took the initiative to makeover Dusun Butuh and it was accepted by the residents. With the participation of NIPPON PAINT brings colour into the village, Nepal van Java is now becoming popular for its instagrammable and colorful houses.

“The popularity of Nepal van Java also benefits the residents. We have around 1,000 residents here from 475 families, and all of them could enjoy more economic opportunities such as opening warung (stall) selling food or coffee, parking spaces, and even motorcycle taxis. This proves that the transformation of Dusun Butuh has lifted the local economy,” said Lilik.

Head of the Magelang Tourism, Youth and Sports – Slamet Achmad Husein, S.E., M.M., said the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is determined to revive the tourism sector through the potentials of village tourism. Nepal van Java is one of the most promising projects as received many attentions from both domestic and international tourists, as the Ministry acknowledges on its website kemenparekraf.go.id

“In this new era of adapting to Covid-19, tourism industry is declining. But we hope that the transformation of Nepal van Java can revive the tourism sector, especially village tourism, and boost the local economy,” Slamet said.

“The simulation of reopening tourism in Nepal van Java has been carried out in stages over the past two weeks by following the health protocols and standard operating procedures issued by the Central Java and Magelang Regency Youth, Sports and Tourism Department. We have recorded 3,000 visitors so far during the trial,” Lilik added.

Talking about Nippon Paints contribution for Dusun Butuh, Sales Area Manager of Nippon Paint Central Java, Topan Wijaksono explained, Nippon Paint has donated 1,361 liters of paint for 300 houses in Nepal van Java, equivalent of 6,805 square meters.

Topan added that Nippon Paint saw the potential of Dusun Butuh to become popular and unique tourists destination. The donation proved to have impacts as Nepal van Java is becoming more famous for its colourful parade reminiscent of Nepals Namche Bazaar.

“We believe that the new colours have empowered the transformation of Dusun Butuh to attract visitors and improve the communitys economy,” Topan said during the CSR of Painting Dusun Butuh (Nepal van Java), Thursday (14/10/2021)

The CSR involved 336 hours of painting with the help of local residents and Nippon Paint employees. The products used include Nippon Weatherbond, Vinilex, Pylox, Elastex Waterproof 3-IN-1, and Matex Cat Genteng. Furthermore, to maintain the cleanliness, Nippon Paint recycled the used cans into trash bins to be placed throughout the village.

“We hope that Nippon Paint could expand this CSR to other villages in Indonesia and improve their economy,” added Topan.
