“Jiading has a rich and storied history, dating back to the Song Dynasty,” says Jerome Lee, Design Director of Wilson Associates’ Singapore studio. “We sought to honor that ancient past by creating an exciting destination in this emerging part of Shanghai, offering traditional art and culture around everycorner for guests to explore.”

The Hyatt Regency Shanghai Jiading welcomes travelers near and far, offering a luxurious, yet attainable hospitality experience. Taking cues from elements of traditional Chinese architecture — hallmarked by the intricate design of the upturned roof — the Singapore-based design team incorporated wistful nods to the graceful waves of the pagoda to create a distinctive arrival experience. The team carried the traditionalcultural theme through the hotel’s design scheme, thoughtfully layering both details and textures toapproach the rich heritage of Shanghai through a modern lens.

The arrival lobby on the first floor is anchored by a stunning three-dimensional projection of a well-known Confucian temple. Created in collaboration with Dragonpace China, the installation features images of the temple layered onto glass. As visitors ascend upwards to the 38th floor sky lobby, art reminiscent of the sparks of a firework display hangs from the ceiling, bringing joy and fulfillment to locals and guests alike. Inspired by the courtyards found situated in front of the traditional Chinese house, the sky lobby is designed to provide a space for the celebration of life and culture.

Presidential Suite Dining Room

As visitors continue to explore the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Jiading, a grand, spiral staircase made of locally sourced materials connects two floors of elevated meeting spaces. Designed to be both airy and agile, each boardroom or salon features sweeping views of Jiading and the latest in technological capabilities. Further up the tower, guests will also find a fully outfitted 24-hour fitness center—complete with an expansive indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, steam room, and sauna.

Presidential Suite Living Room

Each of the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Jiading’s guest rooms features 360-degree views of the breathtaking town below and the scenery of the nearby gardens. Accommodations employ a neutral color palette to compliment the abundant use of maple and walnut timber throughout, providing a soft and soothing space for weary travelers to relax and recharge. Private powder rooms are outfitted with custom, marble-look tile for a clean, sleek aesthetic. The design team worked closely to ensure each element waswell suited for the hotel’s traditional theme, while maintaining the luxury that only a five-star destination can provide.

Curated food and beverage offerings complete the hotel’s balance of old and new. The Market Café overlooks the district skyline and offers a selection of international dishes, each prepared with seasonal ingredients. The design of Market Café is decidedly modern, with an open kitchen and raw bar. For local cuisine, guests are invited to taste freshwater fish and noodle bowls from Xiang Yue ChineseRestaurant’s live cooking stations. Drinks can be enjoyed at the sky-high Lounge while dessert can be found at the Patisserie on the first floor. Recalling the morning tea culture of old Shanghai, the Patisserie is designed to emulate the traditional tea shops and song bird cages of generations past.

The Hyatt Regency Shanghai Jiading opened in August 2018.
