Magical Madeira to Stage Belmond’s Concert

‘Exceptional Music in Exceptional Locations’

From the subtropical paradise of Belmond Reid’s Palace’s beautiful Palm Garden, against the backdrop of steeply rising sea cliffs; guests are invited to a one-off performance by world-class musicians, as they play music inspired by the property’s incredible setting.

Located along the verdant ‘Garden Isle’ of Madeira, this Grande-Dame of the Atlantic with its pink-lady façade provides the picture-perfect stage for a note-worthy recital. The newly designed lobby, with its detailed high ceilings, crystal chandelier and stylish tea terrace, is a befitting guest introduction to the hotel’s botanical gardens, Madeiran authenticity and epic ocean views.

CONTEMPORARY NOSTALGIA

The concert by Soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra this December celebrates a time-honoured tradition at the hotel that harks back to the glamorous 1920s, when an orchestra would play during bathing hours for the cultural glitterati of composers, artists and politicians of the day. Nostalgic reflections still feature throughout the hotel, with vintage artwork telling stories of the many famous guests who have stayed – from Captain Scott who called in 1901 on route to the Antarctic, Gregory Peck who stayed during the filming of Moby Dick, to the musical genius of Portuguese pianist and composer José Vianna da Motta who visited in 1895. Today, the hotel celebrates both contemporary and traditional music – with Fado and performances by Madeira Classical Orchestra sounding out through the historic hallways.

12th December 2017 – Belmond and the London Philharmonic Orchestra present ‘Exceptional Music in Exceptional Locations’ with the first of the concert line-up held at Belmond Reid’s Palace, Madeira.

THE CRESCENDO: A FOND FAREWELL

Music lovers will delight at the rare opportunity to witness up close the talents and emotion of world-class musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra. A string quartet and clarinettist from the world famous Orchestra will perform a specially curated programme of chamber music against the dramatic ocean backdrop. Composed in 1891, the same year that Reid’s Palace opened its doors, Brahms’s masterly Clarinet Quintet was aptly selected to complement the lush romanticism of José Vianna da Motta’s String Quartet in E flat major – his warm style inflected with folk flavours of his Portuguese homeland.
