Jakarta, April 22, 2013 – Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta is delighted to present an  exhibition of paintings by Indonesian talented reknowned artist, Kartini Basuki. The paintings are artistically displayed around the lobby area of the hotel from April 22, 2013 until May 10, 2013.

Kartini Basuki began painting only in 1984 when at the age of 36 she accompanied her husband, art enthusiast Wiwoho Basuki Tjoktonegoro, to the house and studio of S. Sudjojono, known as “the father of modern Indonesian art.” Sudjojono’s frank but gentle attitude found a responsive chord in Kartini and her interest awakened. In Kartini, Sudjojono sensed a seriousness and sensitivity and spontaneously offered to teach her to paint. Only one year after Kartini began to study under him, Sudjojono passed away. Before he died, Sudjojono left an enduring message with Kartini concerning the two basic attitudes essential to painting – spirit and self confidence.

In 1987 Kartini took part in an exhibition of self potraits held by Duta Fine Arts Gallery, curated by the French painter and sculptor, Didier Hamel. Also taking part in the exhibition were many of Indonesia’s best known artists and emerging talents including Affandi, S. Sudjojono and Sudibjo.

In keeping with Sudjojono’s guidance, her potraits are based not on academic technique but on the discovery and exploration of her own personal style. Contrast between light and dark featured strongly in a second exhibition of floral subjects held in the same year. There works displayed both fineness and vibrancy, highlighted through the use of primary colours and a contrasting textures, including some reliefs.

In the six years since Kartini Basuki first put her adult brush to canvas, she has executed more than 100 works which testify to her lifelong passion for art. In two years alone, 1987 and 1988, she exhibit 7 times. Underlying Kartini’s artistic achievement is, always, the echo of her late teacher’s words “Continue painting, for it is a sin to ever stop.”

The Opening of the exhibition was held at The Lobby Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta on Monday, 22 April 2013. This also marked the launching of her book, “Kartini, 30 Years In Art” published by Hexart Publishing. Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta’s General Manager, Mr. Vikram Reddy addressed the audience with a welcoming speech followed by Director of Hexart Publishing Mr. Eddy Djuana. The opening ceremony of the painting exhibition was inagurated by Ms. Titiek Soeharto, Chairwoman of Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia.
