SINGAPORE – October 20, 2012 – W Singapore – Sentosa Cove premiered Island Glamour Unleashed to more than 1,000 stylish, well-heeled guests in celebration of its recent opening. Guests enjoyed a global line-up of emerging DJs, cutting-edge performance acts, pulsating music and bold fashion, curated by local insiders as well as W Hotels Global Music Director Michaelangelo L’Acqua. The event welcomed a who’s who of Singapore, including local celebrities, influencers, tastemakers and hip individuals, including Kit Chan, Zoe Tay, Andrei Peijic, Stephanie Carrington, Jaymee Ong and Dominic Lau.

‘Island Glamour Unleashed’ fused all of the elements that define W Hotels globally as the category innovator and industry leader by showcasing the latest in design, fashion and music. Flown in from the UK especially for the event, superstar DJ Mark Ronson spun his famous beats alongside L’Acqua throughout the night. The freshest fashion trends from local up-and-coming fashion designers took to the runway at a high octane fashion show, featuring works of Chelsea Scott-Blackhall from label Dzojchen and Priscilla Shanmugam from label Ong Shunmugam. Throughout the hotel, forward design and interactive experiences took center stage embracing the eclectic and evolving culture of W Hotels Worldwide.
The event began at 5pm when Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, the Guest of Honour, initiated the evening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was flanked by Executive Chairman of City Developments Limited (CDL), Mr Kwek Leng Beng and President of Asia Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Mr Stephen Ho. VIPs attending the ribbon cutting ceremony included, Managing Director of CDL, Mr. Kwek Leng Joo; General Manager of W Singapore – Sentosa Cove, Mr Stephane Fabregoul; Chairman of Singapore Tourism Board, Mr. Chew Choon Seng; and Chairman of Sentosa Development Corporation, Dr. Loo Choon Yong.
Following after, and in keeping with local traditions, a glittering lion and dragon dance performance expressly commissioned for this event pulled out their best stunts to entertain guests and bring in luck for the recently opened hotel.
Guests were then ushered to the Great Room where they were treated to amplified speeches from Mr. Lim, as well as Mr Kwek and Mr Ho.

A global mix of renowned and emerging DJs and performance acts converged at W Singapore to celebrate the hotel’s Premiere. An opening show, featuring the Wrecking Orchestra dance crew from Japan, mesmerized the crowd with an incredible display of dance maneuvers while illuminated by incandescent lights. Guests were then treated to implausible beats spun by L’Acqua.
Superstar DJ Mark Ronson then took control of the decks and electrified the night at his first ever performance in Singapore. Known for his diverse, genre-spanning selection and rock influence, he brought Hollywood glamour to the premiere event.
Opening for Ronson on stage was Avan Lava, an emerging Indie band from New York City whose unique sounds comes from a mixture of electronica, pop and R&B. Avan Lava represents the excitement and vibrancy of the New York music scene, a city that has inspired the origins of the W Hotel brand. In honor of the Premiere, Avan Lava recorded a cover song of Ronson’s track “Somebody To Love Me,” originally recorded by Boy George as a special treat to all the guests.
Currently on tour, the 2012 W Hotels & burn studios DJ Lab artists converged at W Singapore to entertain guests all throughout the evening. The international lineup includes Victor Kurc (Brazil), Posso made up of Vanessa Giovacchini and Marylouise Pels (USA), Gio Vanhoutte (Korea), Aline Magnier (Berlin), Dogus Cabakcor (Turkey) and London Beats, featuring Klaus De Macedo and Ameet Jugnauth (London).
Fashion Fast Forward
With tracks by Mr Has, W Singapore’s Artistic Director, the fashion experience during the Premiere featured outfits and vignettes from two of Singapore’s brightest designers, Chelsea Scott-Blackhall and Priscilla Shanmugam.
Known for straddling ready-to-wear and custom womenswear, Shanmugam is a Singapore-based designer. Her label, Ong Shamugam was launched in 2010 and her pieces provoke a re-evaluation of traditional Asian dress beyond assumption and stereotype. A trailblazer in contemporary Asian womenswear, the brand has attained critical acclaim and commercial success for its new take on old fashion and for engaging the modern woman in dialogue about history, origin and identity.
Sharing the same runway stage was label Dzojchen founded in 2008 by former model Chelsea Scott-Blackhall, a Singapore-made, New York-based luxury street wear label with premium materials sourced from all over the world. Each of Dzojchen’s pieces are all hand-tailored by bespoke craftsmen. Whilst the brand roots originated as denim specialists, their expansion to leather and denim successfully recreates their exclusivity in both quality and cut.
With its roots in nature and the city’s energy, the design of W Singapore has been inspired by modern interpretations of Sentosa Island’s lush, tropical landscape infused with buzzing energy of the city. Throughout the hotel, natural elements are blended with electricity and light, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere for guests. W Singapore features a provocative collection of cutting-edge design installations designed to engage guests and spur conversation.
For the W Singapore Premiere, Singapore-based designers Studio Juju, winners of the 2011 W Hotels Designers of the Future Award, showcased their award winning creation, THE TENT on the W Lawn. Guests were also greeted with Suitman’s photo booth as he produced memorable shots of them wearing suits created by utilizing props and then projecting the images onto a screen. Androgynous, revolutionary, and interactive, this installation kept guests engaged the entire night.
W Singapore, which opened to the world on 16 September, is ideally situated on the city’s most glamorous island, only minutes away from downtown Singapore.
